Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian Cysts: Cause for Concern?

Ovarian cysts are any ovary surrounded by fluid, like an internal variation of a blister. Ovarian cysts are normally either benign or functional in nature, meaning they aren't a contributing factor in cancer or they're a normal part of the menstrual cycle. They vary greatly in size, and may or may not cause complications.

Ovarian cysts may present with or without pain. On occasion, an abnormal ovarian cyst is determined to be a sign of polycystic ovarian syndrome, at which time tests are done to further refine the diagnosis.

Fertility and the Presence of Cysts

In most cases, ovarian cysts won't interfere with pregnancy or fertility. If you've ever taken an online pregnancy test, you might notice questions involving your history with ovarian cysts. Such questions are important in the calculations made by an online pregnancy test to determine your chances of conception.

As an online pregnancy test is based largely on statistics and has no actual knowledge of your medical history, their accuracy can be debated, but an online pregnancy test can be encouraging to a couple trying to conceive. In the case of women who have had or who currently have ovarian cysts, an online pregnancy test can help reassure them and reduce feelings of uncertainty about their fertility.

How Does it Help?

An online pregnancy test is basically a statistical calculator, geared towards measuring a woman's fertility based on sexual behavior and reproductive medical history. An online pregnancy test assumes you have a percentile chance of getting pregnant, then adjusts that percentage for possible complications, past difficulty, and recent sexual activity. Every online pregnancy test works differently, with different parameters, but they all attempt to provide the same service.

While an online pregnancy test is by no means an accurate method of determining whether or not you're actually pregnant, it can be a way of checking your symptoms before purchasing a home pregnancy test or visiting the doctor. If you've been wondering whether you could be pregnant, or what your chances of conception are, you should try an online pregnancy test.

How Dangerous are Cysts?

Cysts are common and not typically malignant. They're a normal part of the menstrual process, and although they may occasionally cause pain or discomfort, they're nothing to be terribly concerned about. Unless your doctor tells you you're developing signs of a more serious illness, you shouldn't be concerned. Cysts normally appear and disappear on their own, without medication or surgical intervention. If you feel they're a recurring problem and you suspect an underlying cause, talk with your doctor, who may be able to suggest tests to determine whether it's something more serious.

In any case, the presence of ovarian cysts should not interfere with your ability to get pregnant. Infertility is a side effect of polycystic ovarian syndrome, but 'ovarian cysts' and 'polycystic ovarian syndrome' are two drastically different diagnoses. The cysts in question have very different appearances and characteristics.
